This course examines the legal frameworks governing the internet and digital technologies. Students explore how traditional legal doctrines adapt to the challenges posed by networked computing, covering foundational technical concepts, jurisdiction, content moderation and the legal immunity framework of Section 230, privacy law spanning constitutional protections through the GDPR, and platform regulation including marketplace liability, antitrust, and network neutrality. Students develop skills in analyzing internet law problems, evaluating technical resources for legal relevance, communicating legal analysis in professional writing, and independently researching unfamiliar technical concepts. No background in computer science or engineering is expected. Intellectual property law is not a focus of this course. Because these subjects evolve rapidly, specific topics and assessments may change from year to year.
